|WHO CUT THE CHEESE?
(A Cultural History of the Fart)
By Jim Dawson
Ten Speed Press / Random House $9.95
Released in early 1999, Jim Dawson's Who Cut the Cheese? has already sold 100,000 copies (now in its 13th printing!) and become the world's top-selling book on the subject of flatulence. It is also the most comprehensive book on fartlore, containing chapters on historical events (such as the fart in Jerusalem that led to the deaths of 10,000 people in 44 A.D.), recordings (including the history of "The Crepitation Contest"), literary flatulence (from Chaucer, Shakespeare, Swift, Blake, Twain, Zola and many others), Hollywood farts (they're rich, they're famous, they're living your dreams), Internet flatulence (in the ether of cyberspace they can hear you farting), fart humor, fart urban legends, Le Petomane (the famous French fartiste), Howard Stern's Fartman, religious farting, the history of fart words, the anatomy of a fart, and so much more. Nearly everything you'd want to know (or ought to) about farting is in this book.
The book was featured on The Howie Mandel Show (February 3, 1999), and Dawson has appeared on over 200 radio talk shows across America, as well as in Canada, Great Britain, Australia and South Africa.
Who Is Jim Dawson and Why Is He Writing About Farts?
Jim Dawson is a lonely and tortured man who was hounded out of his hometown of Parkersburg, West Virginia (some say tarred, feathered and ridden out on a rail) after displaying X-rays of his farts (which came out as gray images inside his colon) at a local art gallery. The years he spent as a "fartologist," poking his nose where it didn't belong, and asking everyone he knew or met about their farts while researching Who Cut the Cheese?, branded him as a social pariah. Women sniff disapprovingly when he enters the room, and delicate men run for cover. To real guys, however, he's a hero.

ONE BILLION NEW FART AFICIONADOS--LISTEN UP!
|Who Cut the Cheese? is now doing its part to help balance America's trade deficit with China, thanks to a recent (2005) translation and release by the Group of Shanghai publishing company. At the same time, Taiwan is publishing a separate Chinese edition. The title for both is The Embarrassing Smell, because cheese, much less cutting it, doesn't have the same meaning in China.|

"I have no comment. I'm completely speechless."
--"20 weird things to buy on Amazon," San Francisco Chronicle
"Jim Dawson actually wrote a book, Who Cut the Cheese, A Cultural
History of the Fart. Imagine, someone sitting down to write all 200
pages about shooting gas? The world and its crazy inhabitants
never cease to amaze.... What a challenging vocation sniffing
out the facts on flatulence must be. What about the
qualification, a degree in Fartology perhaps?"
--Lenox Mhlanga, NewZimbabwe.com, Africa
"A guy is pretty much critic-proof once he decides
to devote an entire book to farting."
--Steve Wiecking, Seattle Weekly
"You can write about farts all you want in this book,
but you'll never be as funny as a real fart!"
--Howard Stern, "The Howard Stern Show"
"A must read for anyone whose knowledge of the field is, um, cloudy."
--Dave Barry, The Miami Herald
"Dawson's book is, in fact, a scholarly look at the subject,
but our attitudes to flatulence through the ages still yield a
wealth of humor. Here's a book for your porcelain reading room."
"Who Cut the Cheese...isn't quite definitive--if nothing else, it leaves
out James Joyce's passion for hearing and smelling his wife's farts--but
its scope makes it a breath of fresh air in the field of fartology."
--Russ Kick, Disinformation
"Dawson's mother should be very proud!"
--Howie Mandel, "The Howie Mandel Show" (TV)
"Jim, you're a very sick man and you're spending way too much time by yourself!"
--Stephanie Miller, "The Stephanie Miller Show," KABC Los Angeles
"This is one of the funniest books I've read in a long time.
But the author should be locked up!"
--Bill Handel, "The Bill Handel Show," KFI Los Angeles
"Your insights into gaseous emissions are unsurpassed!"
--Karen Kay, "The Karen Kay Show," TalkSpot.com
"Actually, we don't recommend [Who Cut the Cheese?]
on the basis of overly raunchy language when subtlety would've been funnier,
but it does contain several tidbits worth passing along!"
--Roy Rivenburg, Los Angeles Times
"An intriguing, well-researched, amusingly written
treatise on an ever-fascinating topic."
--BookNews, Portland, OR
"Bravo to Jim Dawson.
But don't forget Screamin' Jay Hawkins' warning,
'Do not eat beans, they talk behind your back.'"
--Gerry Fialka, Flipside
"Needless to say, the book is both silly and crass....
[It] gives you something to think about
during those 15 times a day when you let one rip!"
--Stephanie Guerra, Detour Magazine
"There's enough in Who Cut the Cheese? to convince you that
the fart is a pretty potent little cultural symbol!"
--Juliet Waters, Montréal Mirror
