PAPER RAFT
WORDS & MUSIC: Earl P. Reinhalter
I. I sailed upon the water
a vessel battle worn.
we were a son and daughter,
a veteran and his whore.
I saw it there:
truth, truth.
I lost it there:
youth, youth, youth...
II. grey clouds like sails above me,
a mast of lightning struck:
sun bright'ning ammo thunders.
rain rises, gone amok.
I lost it then:
hope, hope.
I caught it then:
rope, rope, rope...
BRIDGE: hard wood splits in half,
in thirds and in splinters,
like a stubborn silence
in shattered isolation
of consecutive winters,
consecutive winters,
consecutive winters.
ENDING: a paper raft
held me.
a breaker laughed:
"see! see! see!"
hard hearts break in half.
hard hearts break in half.
hard hearts break in half.
hard hearts break in half.
